I live with Essential Tremor, and like most people with ET, my day starts in the hardest room of the house. Coffee cups, cereal spoons, pouring milk: mornings are a gauntlet. Over the years I have collected small strategies that genuinely help. None of them are medical advice. All of them are field-tested.
The nine strategies
1. Heavier cups, not lighter ones. A heavy mug dampens tremor the way a heavy camera steadies a shaky hand. Thin, light cups amplify every movement.
2. Fill halfway, twice. Two half-pours beat one full cup you have to carry across the kitchen. Spills happen at the top of the cup.
3. Lids are dignity. A simple travel lid on your morning coffee removes the highest-stakes moment of the day. Use one at home. Nobody is judging.
4. Two hands, elbows in. Bracing your elbows against your body turns your whole torso into a stabilizer. It looks casual and works immediately.
5. Slide, don't carry. Slide plates and bowls along the counter instead of lifting them. Set the bowl by the kettle before you pour.
6. Big handles win. Chunky-handled cutlery and utensils give your grip more to work with. Weighted versions help some people; big handles help almost everyone.
7. Fill the kettle with a jug. Holding a kettle under a running tap is a wrestling match. A lightweight plastic jug does the trip from tap to kettle with much less drama.
8. Sit for the fiddly stuff. Buttering toast, opening pill bottles, peeling fruit: sitting down with forearms on the table removes half the movement from the equation.
9. Time your caffeine experiment. For some of us coffee makes tremor meaningfully worse, for others barely at all. Do not guess. Measure a week with and a week without, and decide based on your own data.
The bigger principle
Every one of these tricks follows the same logic: reduce the precision the task demands, or increase the stability your body brings to it. Once you see that pattern you will start inventing your own strategies for every room in the house.
And that last point about measuring instead of guessing? That is the whole reason we are building TremorZen. Your mornings deserve better than folklore.
